Welcome—IF YOU DARE—to the Third Annual Scream Fortress Very Scary Halloween Special!

Let us be frank with you: Last year's special was pretty darn terrifying, even by our impossibly high standard of scary. To cite just one example: Dracula was taken to the hospital after witnessing just the loading screen of last year's update. That's not Terry Dracula your greengrocer, either. This is the Dracula we’re talking about. And if it scared Dracula, who eats ghosts and craps Frankensteins, we shudder to imagine what it must have done to you.
As an apology, we’re debating taking all of the scares out of this year's Halloween Special. For instance, one playtester thought the Pyro was a little scary, so we’ll probably remove him as a class. Someone else swore he remembered reading something about somebody getting hurt by a gun once. And that sounded scary. So probably no more guns, either. Then Dracula called from the hospital. "Hey guys," he said, "hats are pretty scary." Well, now, that must have been the morphine talking. So we’re adding more hats just to be safe.
Long story short, we guarantee you that nothing's going to scare you this year. There will be no ENORMOUS HAUNTED EYEBALL to terrorize you around an island filled with tons of SECRET LOOT, and a GIANT SKULL! There will be approximately zero percent chance of you getting your trembling hands on a spooky costume FOR EVERY CLASS! And we certainly wouldn't DRAMATIZE THE BACKSTORY of this hypothetical scary update with a FEAR-CHOKED TERROR-COMIC!
No, dear reader, we wouldn't do any of these things. Why? Because we're MUMMIES! Mummies can't make updates, we live in pyramids! What are you, insane? For the answer to that question, keep reading:
YES! YOU ARE!* TWIST ENDING!
* You went insane back in the second paragraph! YOU actually wrote this blog post! The only thing that isn't a figment of your imagination is THIS UPDATE! TWIST FOOTNOTE!
Note: The random gift drops and loot are only enabled on game servers with registered accounts. The easiest way to make sure you are playing on a registered server is to use the "Start Playing" button in the main menu of the game.
For some of us, and indeed this author, FPS games of late have simply felt like a mad rush with those who play the most getting better. Weapon unlocks led to better weapons which led to many casual players having no chance on the public scene.
My thoughts were that the FPS focus had changed for good and the emphasis was all about the console with PC ports.
As a result I was not going to even bother with Battlefield 3 however Andyski talked me in to at least having a look. I'm impressed and it looks like Dice are going back to the formula that works. PC focus and casual gameplay.
The following is taken from an IGN Article but easily shows whats looking good.
Battlefield 2142 was released in October of last year, and Battlefield: Bad Company is set to arrive in early 2008. DigitalBattle is reporting it has been forwarded an internal document that may be the first details on an unannounced Battlefield game, possibly Battlefield 3.
DigitalBattle says the document, a PDF file, seems to be targeted towards investors and lists a set of game features:

* Two playable factions, NATO and MEC (Middle Eastern Coalition)

An urban map called "Baghdad Burning" is apparently also mentioned, and DigitalBattle notes it sounds like it will be similar to the "Strike at Karkand" map from Battlefield 2.
Digital Extremes noted that the game will feature LAN support, an important element to the legacy of PC gaming. Among interface tweaks for mouse-and-keyboard optimization, Homefront will feature match recording and up to 32 players online, with scaling post-launch based on demand. The team also says that mod tools will not be included with the game; however, those features may be added at a later time.
Cod Blops on PC was in a sorry state at launch, as our Xav examined, plagued by poor performance and stuttering. A string of patches slowly brought most issues into line. Of course, the PC woes didn't stop the latest multi-platform entry in the hugely popular franchise from passing $1 billion in sales and being the biggest-selling game of 2010.
Activision continues to build evidence as it accused publishing rival Electronic Arts of conspiring with former Infinity Ward executives to sabotage the Call of Duty franchise.
In a new amended cross-complaint obtained by IGN, the publisher alleges EA asked Jason West and Vince Zampella, who at the time were both still under contract with Activision, purposely held back releasing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Map Pack so Battlefield: Bad Company 2's release would see no competition.
Homefront is a challenging shooter from a studio of self-made developers. Kaos Studios began as renowned mod makers for the Battlefield series before launching their first original work, Frontlines: Fuel of War, one of the first 64-player shooters on home consoles. Homefront is an equally ambitious step into advancing the possibilities of single-player shooter design.
Its story comes from Red Dawn screenwriter John Milius. Kaos has cast his tale of North Korean invasion against a foreground of emotion, consequence, and violence. I recently had a chance to play the game's opening chapter and ask Lead Level Designer Rex Dickson some hard questions about the game's themes, mechanics, and improbable story concept.
Electronic Arts upcoming Medal of Honor title promises to be much darker and more mature. During a fan Q&A posted on the official website, executive producer Greg Goodrich notes the theme of the game won't be for teenagers anymore.
"This will be the very first (M) rated Medal of Honor," Goodrich said
Last week, PC players showed off their warfare prowess by completing the requisite 69 million team actions to unlock the fifth map in the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 expansion within a matter of days.
Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops for PC was downloaded illegally over four million times in one month, according to new data collected by the website TorrentFreak.
The data, which was gathered from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers, shows Black Ops edging out EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on PC for the top spot. This should come as no surprise to most gamers as Black Ops already ....
